New on DVD: Have 'Wicked' good time with musical adaptation
Published in Entertainment News
The first entry in the blockbuster adaption of a beloved stage production tops the DVD releases for the week of Feb. 4.
"Wicked": Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Galinda) star in this movie musical from director John M. Chu that imagines the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz," with part two ("Wicked: For Good") due out in November. Also featuring Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh and Jonathan Bailey.
"With another installment on the way, a gargantuan press tour, and over 100 years of cultural baggage, 'Wicked' is already too big to fail," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "But the weight of expectations is a heavy thing to bear, and they bog down this capable movie version on its way to lift off. The film may struggle to take flight, but when it does, it is undeniably moving, with a message of freedom and defiance that resonates now more than ever."
