New on DVD: Embark on a wellness retreat with 'Nine Perfect Strangers'
Published in Entertainment News
A Hulu series from showrunner David E. Kelley, based on author Liane Moriarty's bestseller, tops the DVD releases for the week of Jan. 28.
"Nine Perfect Strangers: Season 1": Nine stressed-out city dwellers attend a secluded health-and-wellness resort seeking to reinvigorate their lives, but soon realize that the retreat — and the mysterious woman (Nicole Kidman) who runs it — are nothing like they expected. The stellar cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Regina Hall and Bobby Cannavale.
"The tones of 'Nine Perfect Strangers' run in nine different directions, often in the same episode: Wrenching personal confessionals ram straight into comic relief dream sequences," writes Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips in his review. "While co-creator David E. Kelley, who cooked this up with John Henry Butterworth, has gotten away with tonal zigzags plenty in his career, from 'Ally McBeal' on down, here they do not help the overall mission."
