Blue Man: New Orlando show will go on despite closures

ORLANDO, Fla. — Blue Man Group is ending long-running productions in New York and Chicago, but the new show will go on in Orlando, officials say.
A new 578-seat theater at Icon Park, an International Drive entertainment complex, is planned for a fresh Blue Man offering. The addition was announced in June, a groundbreaking event was held in September, and an opening night was scheduled for April 3.
But Blue Man shows are wrapping up Sunday in Chicago and on Feb. 2 in New York, the company announced late last year.
“I am honored and humbled to be part of the historic evolution of Blue Man Group, which started in New York back in 1991, and so it is with deepest gratitude that I announce the final performances in New York,” Jack Kenn, managing director of Blue Man Group, said in a news release. Kenn had similar sentiments regarding the Chicago production.
Work has begun on the Icon Park site, which has been fenced off and leveled. The theater — the first built specifically for a Blue Man production — will be on the east side of the complex, facing Universal Boulevard and wedged between two of the gigantic support posts for the Orlando Eye observation wheel. The location was picked partially due to its proximity to Epic Universe, a Universal Orlando theme park set to open May 22.
A Blue Man merchandise outlet is already operating at Icon Park, and tickets are now on sale. (For more information, go to blueman.com.)
Blue Man, which is owned and operated by Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, also has residencies in Boston and Las Vegas, plus international touring companies.
Blue Man Group had a 14-year run at Universal Orlando in a soundstage in the shadow of Universal Studios theme park’s Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster. Production shut down in 2020 as the pandemic took hold. The Blue Man show never returned and was officially shuttered in 2021. Universal recently confirmed that Rockit will close in September.
