A dramatization about the behind-the-scenes action preceding the first "Saturday Night Live" broadcast tops the DVD releases for the week of Jan. 7.

"Saturday Night": As "SNL" approaches its 50th anniversary, director Jason Reitman takes on the events leading up to the NBC show's premiere in 1975. Gabriel LaBelle plays Lorne Michaels, and the large cast includes Nicholas Braun, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, J.K. Simmons and Ella Hunt.

"Reitman and the talented young cast manage to make 'Saturday Night' much more than just young actors having fun in bell-bottoms and wigs," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "Though 'Saturday Night,' the film, feels ephemeral and somewhat fleeting, it represents something that has endured, and continues to, through the sheer force of will that is Lorne Michaels."
