DETROIT — “The Bear” actor and chef Matty Matheson is bringing Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches to Detroit this month only with the relaunch of the food cart Detroit City Beef.

Opening at the Skip, an open-air cocktail lounge in the Belt alleyway in downtown Detroit, this marks the second phase of Matheson’s Detroit venture. In July he unveiled a new menu at cocktail bar Standby next door to the Skip. While he visited Detroit for the launch of that, he's not here full time at Standby.

The menu is simple. Choose an Italian beef sandwich — featuring braised chuck simmered in beef jus on a soft Italian roll and mild or hot giardiniera, all dipped into the jus — or get a vegetarian fried eggplant sandwich with red sauce, mozzarella and your choice of spicy giardiniera or sweet roasted peppers.

Detroit City Beef is a short-term project and only open through October.

Matheson is a known force in the culinary world, and he recently expanded his reach to television fans with his role as cast member and executive producer of the hit Hulu show “The Bear” about a family restaurant in Chicago. The Canadian chef plays the character Neil Fak, a family friend who works at the restaurant, initially as a mechanic. Now in its third season, "The Bear" is about an upscale restaurant that started as a place that sold Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches.
