NEW YORK — Funnyman Steve Martin reacted to buzz about his possibly playing Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live” by joking the freshly announced Democratic candidate for vice president might try taking his job.

“I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,” the 78-year-old comic posted on Threads.

Calls for Martin to return to the NBC comedy program swamped social media Tuesday after Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, announced Walz as her running mate on Tuesday. Martin and Walz share a passing physical resemblance and have similar mannerisms.

Former “SNL” cast member Maya Rudolph will revive her role as Harris through the presidential election, Deadline reported last week. Rudolph portrayed Harris in 2019 when she was President Joe Biden’s running mate. The sketch show begins its 50th season Sept. 28, and the presidential election takes place Nov. 5.

Martin has appeared on the show dozens of times since 1976. He’s currently on tour with Short, who was an “SNL” cast member in 1984 and 1985.

Emmy Award-winner Alec Baldwin played Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live” leading up to the 2020 presidential election. Trump frequently groused over how he was depicted on the show. Cast member James Austin Johnson has since played the role.

It’s not known who’ll parody Trump’s running mate JD Vance when the “Saturday Night Live” goes back into production.
