NEW YORK — Maury Tierney joining the new season of “Law & Order” is just what the doctor ordered.

The Golden Globe Award winner, known for her roles in “ER,” “NewsRadio” and “The Affair,” is set to become a series regular in the upcoming 24th season of the Dick Wolf procedural, in which she’ll play a police lieutenant.

Tierney’s casting follows the recent departures of series regulars Sam Waterston and Camryn Manheim at the end of last season, which wrapped in May.

For the 23rd season, “Scandal” star Tony Goldwyn and Reid Scott joined Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi and Mehcad Brooks to round out the ensemble.

Tierney, currently co-starring in Universal’s box-office blockbuster “Twisters,” has been on a roll since departing her 10-year turn as nurse-turned-physician Abby Lockhart on “ER.” The two-time Emmy nominee’s recent credits also include the Showtime dramas “Your Honor” and “American Rust.”

Season 24 of “Law & Order” is set to premiere Oct. 3 on NBC.
