SAN DIEGO — A wildfire burning in the Otay Wilderness Area exploded to 4,250 acres overnight prompting evacuation orders and nearby school closures due to air quality concerns.

Safety concerns led the Chula Vista Elementary School District to close the following schools on Friday: Salt Creek, Camarena, Wolf Canyon, Olympic View, Liberty, Eastlake, Marshall and Arroyo Vista. All other schools in the district will remain open.

The San Diego County Office of Education said Friday that Eastlake High, Eastlake Middle, Olympian High, East Hills Academy, High Tech High Chula Vista and Arroyo Vista Charter School would also be closed.

Southwestern College said faculty, students and staff would move to remote work Friday due to the fire.

The community college campus, located at 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista, is serving as an evacuation site for residents who were ordered to leave their homes.

Mountain Empire Unified School District and Warner Unified School District remained closed due to power outages, officials said.
