CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was shot Monday night on the South Side, sources said.

The officer was shot around 8 p.m. near the intersection of East 82nd Street and South Ingleside Avenue. Additional details of the shooting were not immediately available but sources said the officer was in critical condition.

By 8:30 p.m., squad cars blocked off much of South Cottage Grove Avenue by the University of Chicago Medical Center, where the officer was being treated.

Just before 9 p.m., a man in a white coat emerged from the emergency room and gestured for a crowd of officers to follow him around the block inside the hospital.

Officers inside the hospital could be seen reacting to the situation inside the hospital.
