USS Constitution sails the Boston Harbor for 227th birthday

The historic USS Constitution took another sail around the Boston Harbor in honor of the ship’s 227th birthday Monday.
The USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned naval warship afloat in the world and America’s Ship of State, originally launched on Oct. 21, 1797.
The ship set sail at 10 a.m., passing by the Boston Harborwalk, Castle Island and the Charlestown Navy Yard. The warship fired a 21-gun salute near Fort Independence around 11:30 a.m. and then a 17-gun salute near the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, the historic site of Edmund Hartt’s Shipyard, where Constitution was originally built.
The USS Constitution is famous for its role in the War of 1812, where it gained the nickname of “Old Ironside.”
The USS Constitution welcomes more than 500,000 visitors each year, according to the museum website, and is open to visitors from Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
