FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Tropical Storm Oscar quickly strengthened into a hurricane Saturday afternoon after becoming a tropical storm near the Turks and Caicos earlier that morning.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Nadine made landfall near Belize City around noon.

At 5 p.m., Oscar was a small Category 1 hurricane located about 5 miles south of Grand Turk island, moving west at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. The storm is expected to gradually slow down and turn west-southwest into Sunday, after which it should make a sharp turn to the northeast. Oscar could strengthen over the next day or so, after which forecasters predict little change in strength.

Hurricane-force winds extend only 5 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend 45 miles.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas.

Meanwhile, Nadine made landfall near Belize City around noon Saturday. As of 5 p.m., the storm was located 80 miles west of Belize City, moving west at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Nadine is forecast to move across northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico through early Sunday. Weakening is forecast to continue, and Nadine is likely to dissipate by late Sunday.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Belize City to Cancun.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles north of the center.

Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
