ATLANTA — An off-duty Atlanta police detective was fatally shot Friday morning after attempting to break into a home in Douglas County, officials told Channel 2 Action News.

The Douglas sheriff’s office said it was around 5 a.m. when deputies responded to a home on Orkney Way near the St. Andrews Golf Club about reports of an attempted burglary.

“A person attempted to gain entry into the residence (and) when he gained entrance, the homeowner produced a firearm in self-defense and shot the individual. We believe the burglar lived in the neighborhood,” Capt. Jon Mauney told Channel 2.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reached out to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Atlanta Police Department for more information but has not heard back.
