Bronx boxer shot, killed in argument
Ronney Vargas, 20, was killed Saturday when his Honda Accord was forced off the road by an unknown assailant in a white sedan. Police said the unidentified man hit Vargas in the head with a gun and fired once, Newsday reported. Vargas tried to drive away but ran into several parked cars before collapsing.
Cause of the conflict was unclear. Vargas had reportedly been with five friends when an argument broke out with four other people, the newspaper said.
"A coward took my son," German Vargas told the newspaper. "He was such a good boy, humble. The boxing world loved him. They killed a champion."
Vargas, a junior middleweight, was a three-time Golden Gloves champ with an 8-0 pro record including six knockouts, Newsday said.
