Poll: McCain, Obama tied
McCain, R-Ariz., and Obama, D-Ill., tied at 47 percent each among those questioned in the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released late Sunday.
"This looks like a step backward for Obama, who had a 51 percent-to-44 percent advantage last month," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Even last week, just before his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate became known, most polls tended to show Obama with a single-digit advantage over McCain."
Fifty-four percent of those polled said they believed choosing Biden, a senator from Delaware, as Obama's vice presidential running mate was an "excellent" or "good decision."
The poll suggested 66 percent of Sen. Hillary Clinton's supporters back Obama -- a drop from 75 percent at the end of June.
During the Democratic primary season, Clinton won more than 40 percent of her party's delegates. She pledged her support to Obama when she quit her bid for the White House in early June.
