SHAWNEE, Kan. (UPI) -- A kitten made an incredible journey between Missouri and Kansas by surviving the 80-mile trip under the hood of a car.

Kelly Hawthorne told WDAF she first heard the kitten making noises inside the car's engine before she and her family were set to travel back to Shawnee, Kan. from Clinton, Mo. but the curious feline ran away when she opened the hood.

Hawthorne was met with a surprise on their return trip when she found the kitten had hopped back underneath the hood.

"On the way back, we heard, 'Meow!' and my son and I looked at one another and said, 'No way. There's no way this cat came back,' she said.

Despite Hawthorne's disbelief, the 6-week-old kitten had hopped back into the car's engine for a second day and survived the 80-mile trip.

Hawthorne decided to take in the kitten they believed to be a stray after its persistent efforts to join the family.

"Well, I wasn't planning on getting another cat, but the story surrounding this little kitten is too amazing for me to surrender it, I have to keep it," she told KSHB.

A vet determined the kitten was mostly healthy apart from some issues common to stray cats.
