Will God Forgive Me For Not Going to Church?
Q: Will God forgive me because I no longer go to church? I really miss it, but I'm a lot older now and not in very good health, and just can't get around like I used to. I even gave up driving a few months ago. Does God understand? -- Mrs. W.M.
A: Yes, of course God understands your situation. He knows all about us, including our limitations, and He never expects us to do what we simply can't do -- especially as we grow older. Jesus warned Peter that someday he would grow old and infirm, and "someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go" (John 21:18).
But God also knows your heart, and He knows you wish you could still be in church every week, to be with God's people and hear God's Word. Don't let your limitations discourage you or dull your spiritual desires. No, you can't do everything you once did -- but ask God to help you find other ways to stay close to Him. Perhaps your church has a radio or television ministry, or broadcasts its services over the internet. Someone also may be available to take you to church from time to time, as you feel able.
In addition, be thankful for God's constant presence with you, and take time to pray for your church and its ministry, and for others who need God's help. Let your pastor know your situation also, and encourage him in his work.
Above all, keep your eyes on Jesus. Heaven is nearer for you now than it once was, and as we grow older our yearning for Heaven should grow stronger. God's promise is for you: "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you" (Isaiah 46:4).
