CHICAGO (UPI) -- A cat found neglected and covered in pounds of matted fur has found a new home and been made over into a social media star.

The Anti-Cruelty Society shared photos of the cat, known as Sinbad, who was discovered by a Chicago utilities worker suffering from extreme neglect.

"His fur was horribly matted, unwashed, and covered in dirt and garbage," the society said. The basement he was living in was cold and filthy.

Veterinary staff at the Anti-Cruelty Society shaved, cleaned and examined Sinbad to uncover a skinny, and generally healthy cat with a friendly disposition.

"As soon as that hair started coming off and he could walk, he started rubbing up against the people in the room," Anti-Cruelty Society PR manager Colette Bradley told People. He was so affectionate and was looking for love in return. We were all shocked by how friendly he was considering he had such limited human interaction in his life prior to being rescued.

Investigation teams discovered the cat had previously belonged to an elderly man whose failing mental health prevented him from caring for the cat properly.

After the five pounds of fur were removed and Sinbad had begun to recover employee Elliott Serrano volunteered to give him a permanent home.

"They both decided pretty quickly that he was there to stay," Bradley said. His hair is growing in really well now and is so soft! He loves to lay on Elliott's chest and purr. He's very happy in his new home and is really thriving!

Serrano set up a personal Instagram profile for Sinbad, in which the rescue cat can be seen sporting sweaters and various other outfits.
