TOKYO (UPI) -- A visitor to an unusual temple in Tokyo captured footage of the 1,000 "lucky cat" figurines on display there.

The video shows footage from the Gotoku-ji temple, where a collection of 1,000 "lucky cats," white feline figurines with one waving paw upraised, greet visitors.

The lucky cats come in a variety of different sizes and styles, but all feature white and red coloring with the front right paw reaching upward.

There are many different explanations for the origin of the "lucky cat," but one local legend holds the first of the figurines was created in honor of a white cat named Tama that once lived at the Gotoku-ji temple.
