POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (UPI) -- A Great Dane became one of 11 pets nominated for Nationwide insurance's "Hambone Award" which honors odd insurance claims.

Myles the Great Dane puppy's family discovered their pet's love for devouring clothes when a pair of their daughter's pants disappeared.

"When we had an inkling he ate the pants, we were in disbelief," owner Cassandra Orser told the Poughkeepsie Journal. It happened so quickly, we did not think it was possible.

Myles underwent surgery to remove the child's jeans and was forced to go under the knife again after eating a pair of rubberized work gloves.

His unusual case earned Myles the honor of "Most Unusual Claim of the Month" award from Nationwide Insurance placing him in contention for the annual Hambone Award.

Other contestants include a Florida cat named after Marvel comics character Tony Stark who was left hanging by its tail from a set of window blinds, a Cocker Spaniel who passed out after having its head stuck in a bag of potato chips and a Jack Russell terrier who intervened in a violent home invasion.

The contest is open to a public vote and the veterinary hospital which treated the winning pet will receive a $10,000 Nationwide-funded award through the Veterinary Care Foundation.
