WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Google released search trends revealing the most searched spellings by state in honor of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and residents in Massachusetts showed difficulty spelling the name of their own state.

"Massachusetts" was the most searched word in the state on the chart tweeted by Google Trends, which showed the top how to spell search results by state.

Four Massachusetts area students competed in the televised portion of the spelling bee starting Wednesday, including Mitchell Robson, 14, who was one of the final 10 contestants remaining before being eliminated by misspelling the word Wehrmacht.

Alaska also exhibited trouble spelling a U.S. state, most commonly searching for how to spell "Hawaii."

"Desert" and cancelled were the most commonly searched for spellings, topping the charts in four states each.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in a tie for the third consecutive year with Jairam Hathwar and Nihar Janga sharing the title of champion.

Hathwar's home state of New York most commonly searched for how to spell "beautiful," while Janga's fellow Texans struggled most with niece.
