Gas bubbles fuel fire on surface of Australian river

CHINCHILLA, Australia (UPI) -- An Australian man captured photos of flames on the surface of the Condamine River, which has experienced mysterious methane bubbling for nearly for years.
Jon Jenkyn posted photos to Facebook showing the Condamine River's surface on fire near Chinchilla, where methane first started bubbling to the surface in 2012.
Jenkyn blamed the bubbling methane on a gas leak from underground coal mining or fracking, but the Queensland government said the cause remains under investigation.
"Geological complexity and the requirement to gather and analyze surface and subsurface data make this a long-term investigation," a spokesman for Queensland's Department of Natural Resources and Mines told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Jenkyn previously shared video of the bubbling surface of the river.
