MANCHESTER, England (UPI) -- A woman in Manchester fell 60 feet from a balcony in a department store before landing on a bed that cushioned her fall.

Shoppers at a John Lewis in Cheadle reported hearing screams as the woman, 60, plummeted from the glass balcony near the store's escalator and landed on a bed that broke her fall.

Paramedics tended to minor injuries to her hip and spine before taking her to the hospital where she is said to be in stable condition.

"We are glad that the customer's injuries are not thought to be serious, and wish her all the best for her recovery," a spokesperson for John Lewis told the Manchester Evening News.

She landed in an area used for seasonal displays that regularly change and was being used to display beds at the time.

The store was closed for several hours afterwards as police investigated the circumstances behind the incident, which was not being treated as a crime.

"Our costumers' safety is of the utmost importance to us and all of our shops conform to the highest safety standards," a John Lewis spokesperson told The Guardian. We are helping the police with their investigations and continue to offer support to our partners [staff] who witnessed the distressing incident.
