In a game, Gehler-Osterburg, 1962, White was a rook down, yet saved the game. How did White do it?

Solution:

White not only saved it, but won it! 1.g3+ Kh3 2.Qf3 Rg5 [2...Rxg3 3.Qxh5#] 3.g4+ Kh4 4.gxh5 Rxh5 5.Qf4+ Kh3 6.Kg1 h6 7.Kf2 Rg5 8.a4 a6 9.Kf3 b5 10.Qd6 Rf5+ 11.Ke4 Rf2 12.Qxh6+ Kg2 13.axb5 axb5 14.Qg5+ Kh2 15.Qxb5 and the queen and king will mate Black in 35 moves! (that’s what the chess engine says!).
