A new book published by Russell Enterprises has come out called “Checkmate.” It’s a nostalgic piece as it contains all of young Bobby Fischer’s Boys’ Life chess columns! Some of you, like me, may remember them. He answered questions and presented “puzzlers” and credited scouts who sent in the answers. This week we’ll share three of his puzzlers. It’s a mate in three. BTW, remember the Black pawns are moving DOWN the board with some ready to promote to queens.

Solution:

It’s a bit funny that Fischer missed the “dual” solution. The one he gave was: 1.Qd4 f1=Q [1...f1=N 2.Nxf3#]2.Ne4 g1=Q 3.Qa1# All well and good, but both he and the composer missed: 1.h7 g1=Q 2.h8=Q Qg3 3.Qa1#
